The Avada demos do an excellent job selling both the theme and the dream of being able to build a similar website without the need for a developer or coding skills. However, the reality of using a product can often differ significantly from the promises in your promotional material

Before we begin, it is worth noting that there are two schools of thought when it comes to WordPress theme design. The first is that themes must be built for a specific type of website, with a minimal set of customization options and limited additional functionality. The second is that the themes should be multipurpose and include as many features, page templates, customization settings, and options as possible to allow the construction of any website with a single package.

With over half a million sales so far, Avada might be the best-selling WordPress theme of all time.

The Avada developers fall into the latter field. They have used their skills to create a multipurpose theme that is by no means lacking in features, customization options, pre-built layouts, or third-party plugin integrations.

If this is not the type of item you would consider buying, then this review is unlikely to change your mind.

However, if the idea of a flexible theme that can be modified to build any website without any coding knowledge appeals to you, then Avada might be just what you're looking for.

Getting started with the Avada WordPress theme

You can quickly manage the plugins that come with Avada from within your WordPress control panel.

If you look at the front of your web page after activating the theme, you will notice that it looks nothing like the demo version of Avada. However, you have a couple of ways to make things look a little more interesting.

Your WordPress website will not be fascinating after installing and activating the theme.

When it comes to building your new site, one option is to import one of Avada's demo websites, while the other is to use the Merge Builder to create your custom content. As the demos are one of the highlights of this topic, it is highly recommended that you explore them to see the full range of websites that you can quickly create with Avada.

At the time of writing, there were 49 demos to choose from, spanning business, lifestyle, agency, and portfolio websites, to name just a few. Avada is entirely e-commerce ready too, and there are a few online store demos in the pack. As Avada is regularly updated, new demos are often added to the theme.

Once you've chosen a demo, importing it into your WordPress website is a breeze. Unlike other WordPress themes, you have reasonable control over what gets imported into your website, including whether you want to import the entire demo or just some elements of it, such as content, settings, or sliders. Because of this, you should be able to mix and match some of the different elements from various demos.

Avada comes equipped with its own proprietary page building tool - Fusion Builder - which can be used to create custom layouts for your posts and pages.

Unlike some of the latest page builders available for WordPress, the work takes place in the WordPress control panel, rather than the front-end of your website, via a WYSIWYG editor. However, despite this, the user interface is easy to understand and allows you to edit Avada's pre-built content and create your custom designs from scratch.

Although not as modern as other page builders, Fusion Builder is still easy to use.

When starting Fusion Builder includes an extensive library of customizable elements that can be added to your pages.

Due to the way the Fusion Builder works, your designs can be as advanced as you need. By adding multiple containers to your page, each with its column layouts, and then populating them with a series of elements, you can free yourself from the restrictions of the default WordPress Editor.

Work on a new page, you can import one of the pre-built templates from any of the Avada demos.

Regardless of which Avada demo you have chosen, you can easily import pages from other demos.

Alternatively, if you want to start with a blank page, the first step is to choose a column layout for the section you are working on.

Each page can be made up of multiple containers, each with its column layout.

Once you've added a container to your page, you can insert any of the Blend Builder elements into it. Each of these elements can be customized, giving you a lot of control over how your page will look.

Fusion Builder allows you to create advanced layouts for your posts and pages.

Although you don't get a live preview of your work when you use the builder, you can easily view the post or page, as you would with regular content in WordPress. Later, if you need to make any more changes to the layout, you can go back to the previous tab you were working on it.

Another nice feature of Fusion Builder is that any page layout that you create with the tool can be saved in the template library for reuse in other areas of your site.

You have the right level of control over how each piece of content will look on your site.

The controls in the Merge Page Options panel cover some settings such as configuring how the header should look. It is displayed at all. Which sidebars display next to the post or page, and whether to use a background image or not, plus many other things.

Since these options only apply to the individual post or page, you're working. You get a lot of flexibility in how each piece of content on your website looks and works. If you're creating a landing page, for example, you might want to turn off distracting elements like the header and sidebar.

Another way Avada lets you customize your website is through the theme options control panel. As you can see from the image below, there are many options and settings available to you while customizing your website.

The menu options on the left should give you a good idea of the aspects of your website that you can customize with Avada.

However, unlike other themes, Avada doesn't have much support for the WordPress Customizer interface. Because of this, instead of being able to see the effects of your changes to the theme options and settings in real-time, you will have to save your changes and then load your website to see how your site looks.

Almost none of the Avada settings and options are accessible through the WordPress Customizer interface.

To get the most out of Avada, you should probably spend some time reviewing the settings and options. However, when you're just starting, a better approach may be to locate whatever settings you want to tweak as needed, rather than getting lost in the back of your website.

Other Avada options, settings, and features

In addition to the post and page options, Avada's custom post types, such as portfolio and FAQ types, each has its own set of options, as well as their custom taxonomies to help you organize them more efficiently.

Having so many features and tools at your disposal has the potential to encourage you to go overboard with your website creation. Just because you now can add sliders, animation effects, and a host of other exciting elements to your posts and pages doesn't mean you should, as adding too many features to your website can negatively impact timing loading and usability of the page. Sometimes taking a less and more approach to web design is a better way of doing things (depending on the result you are looking for, of course).

The same reasoning can also be applied to the countless customization options on offer. Again, just because Avada makes it easy to choose from several fonts, background types, and other design elements and effects, it doesn't mean you should use them all.

Exercising some restraint can help you avoid the pitfalls associated with too much choice, and help you deliver a low-key website that your visitors will love.

It isn't a theme that's exclusive to Avada, of course - it's something that applies to all feature themes.

Another potential issue that, once again, is not unique to Avada (but worth noting) is the issue of decision fatigue, something that can occur when working through the selection of the settings and options on offer. And that can sometimes limit the ability to make the right design decisions.

Also, having so many configuration options, layout options, and other possibilities can increase the chance that you will be overwhelmed when building your website, which can hamper your ability to create the caliber of a website that you and this theme.

However, if you enter your project with a clear idea of what you want to achieve (instead of being carried away by the features and options that are offered to you), you will have a good chance of success.

If there is a demo that fits the type of website you want to create, Avada should be able to help you quickly launch your new site.

Even if no demo perfectly suits your project, the Fusion page builder tool allows you to edit predesigned content or create your designs from scratch. However, Fusion Builder's lack of front-end page editing means there are easier-to-use alternatives, including themes like Divi, which has its WYSIWYG editor.

Despite the high quality of the demo content, individual page templates, and helpful user documentation, it is essential not to underestimate the task of mastering Avada. Sometimes this theme can feel like a different piece of software sitting on top of WordPress, updating almost every feature and element, while adding a vast selection of tweaks and customization options to the mix!
